Overcoming Obstacles: Advice from Nikou Mohajerani

As the head of a thriving company, Nikou Mohajerani is no stranger to obstacles. As with any CEO, she’s experienced many highs and lows, and as a result she has developed some effective methods for overcoming the worst of the challenges she faces. She shares her advice here.

“Within two weeks of opening my first office, I lost most of my team,” she explains. “I had to wear all of the hats and rebuild from scratch, working 12-16 hour days.” The experience taught Nikou to never lose sight of the bigger goal. By keeping her eye on the ultimate prize, she was able to put together a stronger team that continues to serve her well today. Plus, her determination has led her to the success for which she is now known.
Yet Nikou has also experienced loss in her personal life, and as she quickly discovered, personal setbacks can make it incredibly challenging to balance the needs of home life with work life. Shortly after graduating high school, Nikou’s father passed away after his fight with cancer, causing a tremendous sense of loss. “I couldn’t sleep, couldn't eat.”

Her solution has been to cultivate balance in everything she does. She accomplishes this by asking herself each day whether she’s happy and making positive changes when she is not. Nikou also has a policy to never compare herself to others. Instead, she celebrates every accomplishment, big or small, and congratulates herself when she exceeds her own best efforts.

What’s more, regardless of the hindrances Nikou has faced, she has never given up. “I have people counting on me to pull through and I can’t let them down. Tough times don't last, but tough people do. Challenges have made me an incredibly tough individual!”

Nikou Mohajerani on Female Empowerment

Nikou Mohajerani is a woman on a mission to make being a successful female leader the norm. She has put in a great deal of time and effort into making her own career a successful one and hopes to do the same for other women she leads.

“One of the greatest challenges I’ve faced as a woman in the workforce is being taken seriously,” she explains. “We know how to make it happen. We cannot let how others see us dictate who we are or how we work. Men may see us as soft, not able to take criticism, and lacking in intensity, but we have to prove them wrong.”

She’s done just that, as is demonstrated by her success as the CEO of a thriving business, The Vantage Co. “I am a force to be reckoned with. I have overcome a lot of adversity in my industry and I am now an industry leader to whom people look for advice. I am a female leader who is driving success.”

So what advice does Nikou Mohajerani have for other women looking to break the glass ceiling as she has done?

Take Risks: “Sometimes woman are too emotional, but they need to tap into their inner confidence to take on challenges that will win them big results, even if it seems scary.”

Staying Positive: “Logic and rationality are very important. As women, we need to embrace these characteristics by letting go of a bad day and moving forward on a positive note the next day. I take time to educate other women I hire on how to be emotional vs. rational and how to balance their emotions in this industry.”

Become an Expert: “You’re already an expert in the things you’re passionate about. Capitalize on that by learning more about your passion and then act like the leader you are in that field.”

Nikou continues to encourage female empowerment within her firm and as a volunteer in the community, believing that within her lifetime the workforce will be an equal one.

Encouraged to put academics first by her father who studied with her each evening, and to reach for the stars by her mother who told her she could accomplish anything she set her mind to, Nikou’s family life was instrumental to her success from early on. It was the determination they instilled in Nikou’s character that led her to become independent at the age of 15, entering the workforce in order to provide for herself and put herself through college.

Nikou Mohajerani studied at the University of California, San Diego, delving into biology and structural engineering before settling on a major in management science and international relations.
